I grew up in New York City, knowing that if there was a nuclear war, we would be a top target. My building, like many others, had a soot covered “Fallout Shelter” sign. It was yellow and black and had a circle with 3 upside down triangles on it. I never saw the shelter and assumed it would be dark and dank and rat infested, not an adequate shelter in case of an attack.

I remember the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in 1979 and knew there was a nuclear power plant just north of Manhattan called Indian Point.  In 1982, when I was 11, I joined hundreds of thousands of other people for a massive Anti-Nuclear protest in New York City against nuclear weapons.

With new existential threats from Climate Change, the nuclear threat is still there and has only gotten worse in recent years. Some are trying to push nuclear energy as a solution to climate change. Peace Crane Project is a way to push for positive changes on these issues.
